August 13, 2010
STARTS: 7:30pm

TIM PAK + JOSH ROSE

Saloon Concert @ Nick Fink's-August 13, 2010 - TIM PAK + JOSH ROSE

JOSH ROSE -  Grand Rapids, MI

A character, an actor, a writer, a teacher, a singer of stories with a modern troubadour's gift for getting to the heart of the matter. With his trademark poetic savvy and laid back mid-tempo arrangements (that always find a groove), Josh has minced folk and pop to create his latest album "Slow Bloom" that takes on a invigorating new perspective with each listen. From epic synth-peppered songs, such as Heat Lightning and So Called Crisis, to the bare ballads of Slow Bloom and Rose of Sharon, each of the tracks will ignite tendrils of growth in the mind.

LISTEN to a bit of "Had it Right"

LISTEN to a bit of "Away Tonight"

TIM PAK - Fairlawn, VA (via Detroit MI)

Experience the rough-hewn, no-nonsense songs from man-of-the-people Tim Pak. SOUNDS LIKE: "An old car rollin' down the road, powered by equal parts hope, strong drink and a fondness for simple things, with a guitar and a banjo in the back seat, and problems getting smaller in the rear view mirror." Last appearing at Nick Fink's as part of "Woody's Bastards," Tim has previously led some great Detroit bands including "Angry Red Planet" and "The Salt Miners." He is also an audio magician and producer; he will do your tracks right.

KARISA WILSON + DAVE BOUTETTE

border=
  • KARISA WILSON Grand Rapids, MI
Acoustic soul and funky folk. Karisa Wilson is an acoustic Indie artist who threads the musical genres of the world into a unique, soulfully blended style - with vocals likened to those "of an angel." She has played with bands from heavy metal to bluegrass, and recorded with national acts such as Brian Vander Ark of The Verve Pipe. Among Michigan's finest musicians for the past 10 years Karisa was awarded the Best New Artist Jammie in 2008, and her debut album, Little Girl, was awarded Album of the Year. She recently debuted at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music to two sold-out shows, and with rave reviews.

  • DAVE BOUTETTE -  Ann Arbor, MI
Whether banging out a set of saloon songs at a Michigan watering hole, or settling back for an evening of singing at a fire ring afterward, Dave Boutette will hold his listeners as long as they keep the lights on or until the rain starts.  Stories, advice, observations, or raffles are as apt to appear during a performance as are his songs. Blending many schools of American roots and popular music including folk, blues, swing, and old time country, his songs testify to the power of true love, rebirth, snow plows, and migrating fish.  If you get the chance, stand next to Dave.  Besides feeling taller than you actually are, you may start to see some things in an entirely new light.

SALOON CONCERT (@ Nick Fink's)
A MONTHLY CONCERT SERIES of Acoustic Folk-Pop-Rockery

June 11, 2010
NEW TIME: 7:30-10:00 pm

Folks tend to call anything played on an acoustic guitar "folk music" and Nick Fink's Saloon Concert series aims to show how many directions acoustic music has come from, and how many ways it can go. As the early folksingers and troubadours found willing audiences at roadside taverns, J. Oscar and Nick Fink's bring the music's broadsides, bawdy and beautiful elements together in the rivertown of Comstock Park, Michigan.

THIS MONTH'S CONCERT:

DREW NELSON + DAN BRACKEN

    border=
  • DREW NELSON - Grand Rapids, MI (with Mark D. Schrock and Michael Van Houten)
Every generation has its poets; the writers, musicians, and lyricists who capture the spirit and longings of their time. Those who give expression to our own personal memories and dreams as though they know us. They tell our stories, giving us the words we need to celebrate or let go. That is the soil in which singer/songwriter Drew Nelson has been toiling. Legendary songwriter John Gorka said “Drew’s songs sound like the rest of us feel. His characters are anything but defeated. They are dazed, angry, amazed and climbing”.
  • DAN BRACKEN -  Mt Pleasant, MI
From his father's jazz collection, and the Motown and rock and roll of his youth, to recording and producing classical, jazz, folk, and gospel during many years associated with Public Radio, Daniel Bracken has continually absorbed and incorporated all of this into his own unique style as a singer-songwriter. He performs finger-style guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, and piano. Dan's music is sprinkled with liberal hints of traditional Irish and American roots.

SALOON CONCERT (@ Nick Fink's)
A MONTHLY CONCERT SERIES of Acoustic Folk-Pop-Rockery

Friday, May 7, 2010 9:30-11:30 pm
PRE-GAME / Happy Hour Set at 5:30 pm

GET THE STORY FROM:

Folks tend to call anything played on an acoustic guitar "folk music" and Nick Fink's Saloon Concert series aims to show how many directions acoustic music has come from, and how many ways it can go. As the early folksingers and troubadours found willing audiences at roadside taverns, J. Oscar and Nick Fink's bring the music's broadsides, bawdy and beautiful elements together in the rivertown of Comstock Park, Michigan.

WE BEGIN WITH:

BRANT SATALA (& Emberdrift) + DAVE HARDIN

    Brant Satala
  • Brant Satala - Grand Rapids - Using a palette similar to that of Wilco, Iron and Wine, Dave Matthews, and The Beatles Brant Satala writes on the acoustic guitar and, using other instruments as building-blocks, creates a unique alternative-folk style with rock overtones.
  • "Brant's new band, Emberdrift lifts those songs up on their heat (as the name suggests) and sets them twirling with a voice like coffee with Irish whiskey cream" - Tommy Allen, G-Sync - RapidGrowthMedia.com, May 6, 2010.
  • Dave Harding
  • Dave Hardin - Michigan, by way of FL,TN, MS, OH, ETC -  probing stories of real life, fueled by real emotion, glimpses of everyday events that, through his poetic examination, become profound. Hardin's voice gets inside your bones. It's a tuneful rasp with a hint of twang, like John Prine with more air and less dirt. (davehardinmusic.com)
